Authors to discuss water and power | News, Sports, Jobs

Jonathan Scheuer and Bianca Isaki, authors of “Water and Power in West Maui,” will discuss their book during a free event from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lahaina Public Library.

The book draws attention to the ways control of water resources has been key to the creation and perpetuation of political and economic power and privilege across Hawaii, according to a news release for the event.

Scheuer and Isaki will identify practical solutions while diving into the unsustainability of the state’s current management of ground water by “sustainable yield.” They will also discuss the physical and legal infrastructure surrounding water management, including recent efforts to restore stream flows on Maui. A question-and-answer session and book signing will follow.

Organized by the Lahaina Public Library and the North Beach West Maui Benefit Fund, the free informational talk story is the first in a series focusing on community-oriented solutions confronting West Maui today, including water management, traffic congestion, overtourism, housing and other struggles.
